The LDS Counterfeit Eternal Life

eternal lifeEternal life is a commonly shared term used by both Mormons (of the LDS church) and Christians, but the term means something vastly different to each. Mormonism teaches:

Here, then, is eternal life – to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one; from grace to grace, exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings, and to sit in glory, as do those who sit enthroned in everlasting power…. (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 1966, p. 321, bold emphasis mine)

That is strange and dangerous enough to reject all of Mormonism, but the following quote adds to their astoundingly destructive view of eternal life. Under the subject of the Book of Mormon, their own book says:

And those who receive it [the Book of Mormon] in faith, and work righteousness, shall receive a crown of eternal life; but those who harden their hearts in unbelief, and reject it, it shall turn to their own condemnation (Doctrine and Covenants 20:14,15, bold emphasis mine)

According to Mormonism, one must accept their false Scriptures to get eternal life and to correctly reject the Book of Mormon will mean condemnation! The real truth is, eternal life is both the life of God and what a person gets this side of the grave when he truly has the Lord Jesus Christ, who is eternal life. That is also when one passes from death to life and becomes a new creation in Christ:

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:11-13)

I tell you the truth, he who believes [in Jesus] has everlasting life. (John 6:47)

NOTE: The same Greek word translated everlasting life in John 6:47 is translated eternal life elsewhere. They mean the same.

[Dan Corner firmly believes the message of the Book of Mormon and Mormonism as a whole are a spiritual snare and stumbling block for people who want the eternal life mentioned in the Bible.]

You Can Fall Away Fast

God’s truth is God’s truth, including the ability to fall away fast. The Biblical fact that solid Christians can fall away fast by disowning Jesus is clear! A close look at Peter’s denial of Christ proves this and shows how guarded Christians must be with their words. Jesus told his apostles:

Fall Away In One Night

This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered. (Mat 26:31)

Jesus spoke that at night, and before morning all the apostles already had fallen away. Falling away can happen that F-A-S-T, according to the ultimate authority. Mt. 26:31 also states that it is the sheep who fall away, not the unsaved, like some eternal security teachers say to protect that false gospel. In verse 34, Jesus repeated to Peter what would happen and added an important fact:

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” (Mat 26:34)

Very soon after that, before the rooster crowed, Peter had already fallen away (v. 31) and that happened when he disowned Jesus verbally before man. Hence, if a Christian today disowns Jesus with his words he falls away. The details of how Peter disowned Jesus are cited in Mt. 26:69-75. Peter disowned Jesus by denying that he was with him and by saying I don’t know the man. It was that easy and happened that fast! So how serious is that? As we just observed, when a Christian disowns Jesus, he falls away (Mt. 26:31 cf. v.34), but there is more. He also gets disowned by Jesus in return (Mt. 10:33).

But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.  (Mat 10:33)

That is plain enough to know that equals loss of salvation, which can happen fast with a single incident of disowning Jesus. If Jesus disowns you, you are no longer his sheep, no longer his body, etc. That is why we also read Peter would have to be converted after his denial:

Peter Needed Converted Again

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. (Luke 22:32-34, KJV)

Jesus said Peter would have to be converted after his thrice denial and when Peter would turn back to God he was to strengthen his brothers. The same Greek word for converted in Lk. 22:32 is also found in James 5:19,20 which is used to show one’s soul is lost when he needs to be converted. So Peter lost his salvation and it happened very quickly by his speaking a few words equated to disowning Jesus. Such can only happen to Christians and can even occur quickly to spiritual leaders, as with the apostles.

Here is one final detail to nail the eternal security coffin lid down even tighter. When the apostles fell away (Mt. 26:31) it is the same as what is mentioned in Mt. 13:21 with the person who believes for a while then falls away during persecution (Lk. 8:13). It is possible to very quickly lose salvation with a single sin through spoken words. It doesn’t have to be practice of sin or lifestyle sin, as even some false prophets teach who might claim to be teaching holiness! The same warning of spiritual death cited in Mt. 10:33 is reiterated after the cross in 2 Tim 2:12, If we disown him, he will also disown us. Similarly, we don’t have the Father if we deny the Son (1 John 2:23). See also Rev. 2:13; 3:8.

He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin. (Prov 13:3)

IF Is Conditional

conditional gospel of grace The controversy about the believer’s security is immediately ended by observing the various Bible passages related to eternal life that contain the little word “if.” Since if is the badge of a conditional statement, then the believer’s security is clearly conditional and not unconditional with such evidence. Here are the eternal facts, like it or not:

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. (1 Cor 15:2)

The one and only Christian “gospel” shouts out a conditional security for the believer. It is another gospel which denies that. As clear as that is, the following verses also supplement that gospel truth with more insights by saying the Christian must hold firmly till the end to share in Christ, etc.:

We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. (Heb 3:14)

For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, (Rom 8:13)

See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us–even eternal life. (1 John 2:24,25)

About a dozen other Scriptures could also be cited, but those four suffice to prove that the believer’s security held out in the Christian gospel is conditional, that us sharing in Christ is conditional, that the Christian experiencing spiritual death or not is conditional, and us remaining in Christ and having eternal life is also conditional. It doesn’t get any better than that as far as clarity!

Any person open to the truth of Scripture can verify those facts for themselves. The conclusion, though disturbing to many, is a conditional security for the believer. That means there is no once saved always saved or eternal security, since all those spiritually lethal things can occur and can therefore interfere with final salvation and inheriting eternal life (Gal. 6:8,9).

John 3:16 and Eternal Life

If there is just one verse which evangelical Bible-using people know it is John 3:16. It is commonly heard in Bible preaching circles, but often misunderstood and misused to teach and even allow for the heresy of once saved always saved. Some use John 3:16 for their salvation with no repentance message (sometimes called free grace or antinomianism in our day). John 3:16 is wonderfully detailed about eternal life. It tells us that because God loved the world (unsaved mankind) as he intensely does, he gave his unique one of a kind son (only begotten son) for our salvation:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

John 3:16 continues on to state the object of our faith is to be the Son (the Lord Jesus) and not the Father and the Son (or Jesus and Mary, as some Catholics might think). It also explicitly states that whoever “believes” in Jesus shall not perish, but have eternal life. NOTE: In the end one will either perish or get eternal life. That doesn’t mean, however, that an aspect of eternal life is not possible here and now, this side of the grave, for it certainly is (1 John 5:12,13; etc.).

When people focus in upon the terms “believe” with no repentance mentioned in John 3:16 and “shall not perish” related to salvation, serious misunderstandings surface, especially with the expert dark help of false teachers. That is why truth seekers need to personally search through the Bible, examining the context and considering all other related Scriptures on the same topic. When that is done, it becomes clear that under the umbrella phrase, believes on Jesus for eternal life, that repentance is included. Furthermore, the word believes in John 3:16 is a continuous tense. The offer of eternal life and never perishing is held out only to those who continue with Jesus and:

  • don’t cease believing (Lk. 8:13),
  • shipwreck their faith (1 Tim. 1:19),
  • have their faith destroyed (2 Tim. 2:18)
  • get into unbelief (Rom. 11:19-23), which are all possible.

It is also imperative to note that, to believe on Jesus is equated with obeying and/or following Jesus (John 3:36; Acts 5:32; Rom. 6:22; Heb. 5:9; etc.). You can’t get eternal life and avoid perishing by being immoral or living unholy (Eph. 5:5-7; 1 Cor. 6:9,10; Rev. 21:8; Gal. 5:19-21). You must endure to the end to be saved (Mt. 10:22; Heb. 3:14; Rev. 2:10,11). All of that related information is essential for a proper understanding of John 3:16 and eternal life. Without it, misinterpretations leading to dangerous deceptions will certainly occur! There is NO eternal security and the only way to escape perishing is to live holy as you continue to believe on the Lord Jesus here and now. The true plan of salvation (inheriting eternal life) under Biblical grace is not related to Calvinism in any of their five points. God bless you.

Paul’s Tears

Paul's tearsContrary to the way Christian people tend to envision the Apostle Paul, he was a man of tears and sorrows as he served God. He was not the photogenic smiley type of our day with a toothy appearance. That is crystal clear. His righteous sorrow which produced heartfelt tears came from various church related issues, which he apparently considered serious. His grief reflects his godly heart and the seriousness of the related offenses. Let’s observe those offenses and learn:

For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you. (2 Cor 2:4)

The context of 2 Cor. 2:4 refers to his previous epistle, in which he addressed different issues including expelling the sexually immoral wicked man from among their congregation (1 Cor. 5:13). His God inspired directives were the proper course of action for them to act on, though they may not come easy. In a different letter, Paul expresses how hurtful it was for him to observe the many who were living as enemies of the cross:

For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. (Phil 3:18)

He went on to write: Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. That brought Paul to tears just to mention it! Next is a concise autobiography of Paul’s ministry, where he mentions his own tears:

I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews. (Acts 20:19)

Tears were an major part of Paul’s overall ministry as was his great humility. Nothing about Paul’s laughter or smiles is ever mentioned, just his tears! The last passage shows how apparently dangerous false teachers can be to the sheep (Christians).

Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears. (Acts 20:30,31)

Paul warned the spiritual leaders with tears at all hours of the day and night about the seriousness of false teachers he described! Paul too was like his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ – a man of sorrows (Isa. 53:3).

God’s Goodness

God's goodness When we read of God’s goodness, the inclination is for us to misunderstand his goodness because of the tendency we have to look at it from our limited natural point of view. That can be very misleading when viewing that or any attribute of God because God is infinitely different than we are:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isa 55:8,9)

God also has set the highest value on the souls of mankind. The Lord Jesus said this:

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? (Mark 8:36)

Since God doesn’t want anyone to perish (2 Pet. 3:9), he will do all he can to help man come to him through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus (Acts 20:21). For man to come to salvation (and eternal life), he must first repent, but that is brought on by godly sorrow:

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. (2 Cor 7:10)

That verse says godly sorrow brings repentance and Rom. 2:4 say God’s goodness leads you toward repentance. So it is God’s goodness which can aid repentance through godly sorrow. For the Prodigal Son, as a backslider, he got so low he longed to eat animal food but got none before he repented and returned to salvation! That was God’s goodness which led to his repentance. Being humbled to that degree worked in his case, but doesn’t with others! For example, Jehoram was a wicked king whom God afflicted with a painful and incurable bowel disease (2 Chron. 21:18-20), yet there is no evidence that he ever repented! That painful affliction from God was a manifestation of God’s goodness to him, but he rejected God’s goodness which could have led to his repentance and eternal life.

The Second Death

second death, lake of fire Sometimes in the Bible, multiple names are given for the same thing. For example, lust in the heart is another name for adultery (Mt. 5:28,29) and greed is another term for idolatry (Col. 3:5), but it doesn’t stop there. The lake of fire has another name. Strangely it’s the second death (Rev. 20:14). The term second death is found three other times in the Bible. Rev. 20:6 tells us who will escape it:

Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

You must be blessed and holy to avoid the second death. The blessed are described through the New Testament such as in Mt. 5:3-12; 11:6; etc. and the holy are the same as those who do God’s will (Mt. 7:21; Lk. 8:21; Rom. 6:22; etc.) If you aren’t being depicted as such, hopefully you can sense the great danger you are in and repent to alter your future second death! The details about the second death continue on:

Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. (Rev 2:10,11)

The context shows that passage was written to those who had already been born again and would yet be suffering during their earthly life for righteousness sake. They would have to be faithful to the point of death to escape being hurt by the second death. Their past moment of faith in Jesus when they became a new creation in Christ wasn’t good enough in itself, according to Jesus. They would have to be faithful to the point of death. See also Heb. 3:14 and Mt. 10:22. Also, experiencing the second death isn’t just for unbelievers like many have been duped into believing! Many others will be there too:

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. (Rev 21:8)

Please don’t think that only Rev. 21:8 describes the ones who will go to the fiery lake of burning sulfur (the second death). Other Scriptures add to that list (1 Cor. 6:9,10; Eph. 5:5-7; Gal. 5:19-21; Mk. 7:20-23; Rev. 22:15; etc.) If you are described there you need to act on the Biblical plan of salvation, which includes repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus. If you are a backslider, God wants you back, but you must turn away from your sins. Don’t be deceived! You can NOT sin and get away with it. Turn to God today. Don’t delay. Tomorrow may be too late. You don’t have to experience the second death, but will unless you endure to the end (Mt. 10:22).

Courage

courageThe devil is a master at deception. He can make things seem right when they are wrong, true when they are false and saintly when they are unholy. He has many professing Christians thinking a Christian is a sinner, who could never lose his salvation, when a Christian is really a righteous person who can lose his salvation.

The devil has some unbelievers, especially men, thinking Christianity is for the weak and cowardly, when the opposite is true. The fact is, it takes courage to be a Christian in this sin filled society. To be unjustly hated and persecuted while remaining faithful doesn’t come easy or automatic. It takes courage among other things. To stand true in the face of danger, especially when you are outnumbered, isn’t something a coward can do. Courage can be defined as acting the right way when fear could easily take over, especially during persecution for righteousness’s sake.

Anyone thinking properly, should be able to see that God’s prophets, who stood alone before wicked kings and openly reported their sins and wrong decisions, were courageous. John the Baptist issued a bold public denunciation of an adulterous king, which later cost him his life. He was courageous, as well as protecting himself from the king’s blood by warning him. No coward could act like that.

I like to challenge people who think Christianity is for cowards to try it and see! Such deceived people are so faithless and cowardly they won’t even start the race following Jesus to go against the flow of unsaved family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Anyone can blend in with the majority, but it takes faith in Jesus and courage to stand alone and live holy to reap eternal life (Gal. 6:8). Courage is a must for a Christian:

I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. (Phil 1:20)

But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast. (Heb 3:6)

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. (1 Cor 16:13)

The opposite of the courageous are the cowardly:

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. (Rev 21:8)

MAKE A NOTE OF THIS: It takes courage to be a Christian. It’s the cowardly who aren’t courageous. Do you have the faith and courage to walk with Jesus as an overcomer that is needed to escape the fiery lake of burning sulfur?

You Can NOT Sin And Get Away With It

you cannot sin and get away with itOne thing is certain, you can NOT sin and get away with it. No one has ever done it and you will not be the first! Sin is still the issue, can send you to hell and God knows when you sin. Anyone who minimizes the dangers of sin is a dangerous snare to your SOUL. Such a blind guide is much more potentially ruinous than a quack medical doctor or a serial killer because his lies can adversely affect you throughout eternity. Do not be deceived: You can NOT sin and get away with it.

Consider the people in the Bible who sinned. The record shows none ever got away with it. The evidence is everywhere. Lucifer, an angel, was already in heaven and lost his salvation over pride. When Adam and Eve sinned, they died spiritually (Gen. 2:17) and were banished from the garden of Eden after God cursed the serpent, the woman, Adam and the ground (Gen 3:14-19)! Then Cain murdered his only brother because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous (1 John 3:12)! God cursed him, put a mark on him and he became a restless wanderer (Gen 4:11-15).

Various forms of wickedness and deceptions were committed throughout the whole Old Testament, yet no one ever sinned and got away with it. Besides the spiritual death which occurs when a righteous man turns to evil (Ezek. 3:20,21; 18:24; etc.), there were other acts of God’s judgment, which varied. Some people were struck dead like Nadab and Abihu were because they offered strange fire (unauthorized fire), Lev. 10:1,2. Uzzah was struck dead when he reached out his hand to steady the ark of the covenant, as it was being moved (1 Chron. 13:9,10). In the New Testament, Ananias and Sapphira were also struck dead over something that many would never even consider serious much less a sin (Acts 5:1-10). They didn’t sin and get away with it under grace! God could see their sins. Their future sins were not automatically forgiven, like the savage wolves in sheep’s clothing want us to believe! Don’t be deceived. Take warning! You can yet go to hell. Even causing another to sin is very serious (Lk. 17:1-3).

The devil, who only has your worst in mind, can make sin look so glamourous and advantageous when he is tempting you. He can even offer some temporal pleasures with it for a short time (Heb. 11:25). The Prodigal Son is proof of how successful the devil can be. He was lured away from the presence of the Father into wild living and sin with the prostitutes. God only knows the exact temptations the devil gave him, but he couldn’t get away with sin either. It brought him very low. He longed to eat what pigs were eating and got nothing! But that wasn’t the worst of it. He died spiritually and became lost (Luke 15:24), like other backsliders. It brought him death, as it will you (James 1:14-16).

Even the unforgiving can’t sin and get away with it! Jesus made it clear that unless you forgive people who sin against you, you won’t be forgiven (Mt. 6:14,15)! In fact, you can be held responsible once again for your past forgiven sins (Mt. 18:23-35)! What a shock to hear that fact. Many never do and just go with the flow believing that sin is not so bad anymore, since the Lord Jesus died on the cross. Don’t be deceived: You can not sin and get away with it, even if it is with unforgiveness!

It’s holiness or hell. To follow the crowd will end in fiery torment for you. You must be righteously different to enter God’s holy presence after death. You must love God to have salvation. You must OBEY to have eternal salvation (Heb. 5:9). You must sow to please the HOLY Spirit to reap eternal life (Gal. 6:8). Do NOT be deceived, you can’t sin and get away with it. There are no secret sins. God knows, even if it is lust or greed. He knows the motives behind every word and action! Humbly cry out to God for mercy and forgiveness. Turn from your sins and follow Jesus unashamedly and faithfully. Your eternal life depends upon it! There is no once saved always saved. Do not be deceived.

Warn The Wicked and Righteous

warn the righteous and the wickedWarnings in the Bible were given to help the people they were given to but also to spare the warning givers of various spiritual adverse effects, which would be avoided by faithfully speaking out the warnings! This was clearly the case with the Ezekiel warnings regarding blood guilt. Those warnings were given to both the wicked and righteous.

Warn The Wicked Man

The warning to the wicked man:

When I say to a wicked man, “You will surely die,” and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself. (Ezek 3:18,19)

That passage shows a wicked man has free will which affects his future. He is not predestined to act a certain way. It is his choice to repent or remain unrepentant. It is also the choice of the servant of God (Ezekiel) to give the warning or not. To give such a warning to a sin-loving wicked man could bring serious repercussions, but to not give it would mean God would surely hold Ezekiel accountable for the wicked man’s blood. Many would be in agreement on that, but when we read the next two verses, false teachers twist or avoid the clarity of what they say, because they were given to the righteous and they refute their theology.

Warn A Righteous Man

Warn the righteous:

Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. Since you did not warn him, he will die for his sin. The righteous things he did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning, and you will have saved yourself. (Ezek 3:20,21)

A righteous man is a person who is not doing evil, but if he does turn to evil, he will die spiritually. This proves a saved person can backslide, which is sometimes implied as an impossibility by the grace changers in some of their sermons. John MacArthur and Ray Comfort have both taught that way. Moreover, the death caused by turning to sin has to be spiritual death and not physical death because King David is an example of a righteous man who turned to evil, but didn’t die physically! He died the same way Adam and Eve died when they turned to do evil. They too continued to live physically, but died spiritually, as God warned (Gen. 2:17). The prodigal also remained physically alive, but died spiritually when he turned to evil (Lk. 15:24). Furthermore, they didn’t remain saved after turning to wickedness until their physical life was finally ended before they died spiritually. They died spiritually when they turned to evil and spiritual death can happen, in some cases, over one sin!

So for Ezekiel to issue such a warning to a righteous man could prevent that righteous man from backsliding! That alone proves how important valid warnings like that can be. Sin is still the issue, even after getting born again. Furthermore, as with warning the wicked, the warning giver would be saved from the righteous man’s blood, even if he disregards the warning and does turn to evil.

NOTE: The poisonous theology of once saved always saved can NOT issue such a warning of spiritual death for the righteous because they wrongly think that is impossible! Ezek. 3:20,21 are powerfully clear verses which also show, among many others, that Calvinism is  fatally flawed! The most they can do is twist the meaning of death to try to save their doctrine of demons.

DO NOT BE DECEIVED: Turning to sin will bring the righteous (the Christian) to his spiritual death, according to New Testament grace (Rom. 8:13; Gal. 5:19-21; 6:8,9; James 1:14-16; 5:19,20; etc.). Also, Paul believed he could be held accountable for the blood of others and warned them (Acts 20:26,27), just like we read in Ezek. 3:18-21! So, apparently those same truths must apply to us today. Are you warning the wicked? Are you warning the righteous in a way the once saved always saved proponents can NOT, that is, that they can yet go to hell? You better start warning for their sake and yours!
